The Story Behind BurnerAlert™

For the past several years, Matthew Porraro, pictured above with his family, was alarmed many times to find the stove burners left ON unintentionally. Several times he or his wife were burned as they grabbed a pot – hot from an unseen low flame accidentally left on underneath. On another occasion, his shirt almost caught fire from a burner with a low flame left on. And, on many more occasions, Matthew found scorched pots on the burner with all the water evaporated and the burner still on. On almost all gas stoves there is no indicator to alert the user that the burner is on. Matthew’s first approach was to search for a product that would help solve this problem. To his surprise, there were only very expensive solutions, and these options were difficult to install and/or required special tools and licensed contractors. In addition to the high cost, these possible alternatives often required shutting down the entire stove. Frustrated and worried about his home going up in flames, Matthew initially designed and built a simple burner alert for the knobs on his own stove. He attached the burner alert – a simple plastic disc – to each of the knobs so that that anyone in the kitchen would know a burner was ON, and would avoid being burned. Originally, Matthew created the burner alert for his own use. While testing the first prototype on his stove, a good friend stopped by. She watched as the disc illuminated when the burner was turned on, and exclaimed, “I need one of those for my stove! I seem to always leave a burner on a low flame.” Soon, other friends and neighbors were asking if they could get one of these burner alerts. Matthew, his family and friends began to informally call the disc the burner alert. Hence, the name and the idea to bring the product to market were born. The United States has 132 million households with natural gas or electric stoves. We extrapolate that there may be as many as 800 million gas or electric stoves worldwide without some indicator to alert the user a burner is ON. The Porraro family would like to see as many of these households experiencing the benefits of BurnerAlert™ as they have. Cooking Safety in the kitchen has never been more affordable.
